How Secure is Your Warehouse Facility?

Protecting your warehouse inventory and equipment from theft can be a challenge. Because of their large sizes and complex layouts, there are many areas in a warehouse where vulnerabilities can occur, increasing a facility’s risk to external threats as well as internal employee pilferage. Here’s a look at some tips for safeguarding your facility from theft and vandalism.

Focus on Layout

Limit the number of exterior doors and secure the entry points with locks, sensors and/or alarms.

Have one door for entering and leaving the facility; all other doors should be armed with fire alarm bars and used for emergencies only.

Keep dumpsters away from doors or keep them locked to eliminate an opportune place for thieves to store pilfered good for later retrieval.

If possible, locate shipping and receiving docks so they are not too close together, or separate them by placing barriers between them.

Locate the facility manager’s office where the manager can have a good visual of both shipping and receiving areas and docks.

Create some distance between the parking lot and the warehouse.

Limit Visitor Access

Require all visitors to sign in.

Locate waiting rooms and visitor restrooms so that visitors do not have to travel through the warehouse to reach them.

Secure Valuables

Password protect your inventory tracking software.

Secure high value inventory with rack mounted security panels or free-standing security cages.

Designate high security aisles for theft prone items and control access with security gates.

Store high value items in a separate room or facility.

Alarms and Surveillance

Alarms, along with and some level of video surveillance, are must-haves of any warehouse.

Additionally, large facilities should employ security personnel at checkpoints.

Use motion detectors to detect when someone is on the premises when they shouldn’t be.

Install glass-break sensors if you have ground level windows.

Use door sensors to alert management when a door is left open.

Integrate electronic building access control technology so that only people with permission can enter the premises or secure areas within the facility.

Safeguarding your facility against theft isn’t the only method for controlling inventory shrinkage, but it plays a big part. Because warehouses and distribution centers are frequent targets of both professional and amateur thieves, it’s not worth the risk to leave your facility vulnerable.   Photo Credit: [/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container][fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”no” equal_height_columns=”no” menu_anchor=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”center center” background_repeat=”no-repeat” fade=”no” background_parallax=”none” parallax_speed=”0.3″ video_mp4=”” video_webm=”” video_ogv=”” video_url=”” video_aspect_ratio=”16:9″ video_loop=”yes” video_mute=”yes” overlay_color=”” video_preview_image=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” padding_top=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=”” padding_right=””][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ layout=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” border_position=”all” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” center_content=”no” last=”no” min_height=”” hover_type=”none” link=””][fusion_text][fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”no” equal_height_columns=”no” menu_anchor=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”center center” background_repeat=”no-repeat” fade=”no” background_parallax=”none” parallax_speed=”0.3″ video_mp4=”” video_webm=”” video_ogv=”” video_url=”” video_aspect_ratio=”16:9″ video_loop=”yes” video_mute=”yes” overlay_color=”” overlay_opacity=”0.5″ video_preview_image=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” padding_top=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=”” padding_right=””][fusion_builder_row][fusion_text] SaveSave [/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container][fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”no” equal_height_columns=”no” menu_anchor=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”center center” background_repeat=”no-repeat” fade=”no” background_parallax=”none” parallax_speed=”0.3″ video_mp4=”” video_webm=”” video_ogv=”” video_url=”” video_aspect_ratio=”16:9″ video_loop=”yes” video_mute=”yes” overlay_color=”” video_preview_image=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” padding_top=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=”” padding_right=””][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ layout=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” border_position=”all” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” center_content=”no” last=”no” min_height=”” hover_type=”none” link=””][fusion_text] SaveSave SaveSave [/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]]]>
