Is Pallet Rack Protection Worth It?

Is Pallet Rack Protection Really Worth the Cost?

Accidents happen. And in a warehouse environment, you can bet money on it. One of the most common warehouse mishaps involve a forklift. Whether due to a novice worker who takes a wrong turn, or an experienced operator having an off-day, forklift accidents can result in pallet rack damage, costly repairs, downtime, damaged inventory, and injury to workers.

There are ways, however, to help lessen or eliminate the forklift damage altogether, and one of the simplest is to use pallet rack protection. The old Ben Franklin aphorism, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” has never been more true than when it comes to preventing pallet rack failure. While many think of pallet rack protectors as optional accessories, we think of them as necessaries, because not only do they help to protect your bottom line, they can help protect your workers, as well. Here’s a look at some of the pallet rack protection accessories available.

Column Protectors (also called post protectors) are available in various heights, usually 12”, 24”, 36”, and 48”.  Free standing column protectors mount to the floor in front of the upright post, and are available as aisle post protection or corner post protection. Bolt-on or clip-on column protectors attach directly to the column.

End-of-Aisle Protection is important because it offers protection to the most vulnerable part of your pallet rack system, the ends of the aisles, or rows.  There are several types of rack-end protection.  These row end protectors are typically sold as individual ‘right’ or ‘left’ rack protectors, or as a combined ‘double-headed’ protector. Bollards and guard rails are other types of protection used at the ends of the aisles.

Pallet Rack Guards consist of steel welded wire mesh panels that attach to the racks to contain and minimize the potential hazard of falling items.

Guide Rails anchor to the floor and provide a rail or bumper that protects pallet racks from forklift abuse. This type of pallet rack protection is great for drive-in rack systems and a necessity for narrow aisle applications.

All of these types of pallet rack protection are available in many styles and forms from a variety of manufacturers. Don’t wait until it’s too late.  Connect with us now to discuss options for protecting your rack system, your inventory and most importantly, your workers.
