Warehousing Basics: Understanding Pallet Rack Systems from the Ground Up – Introduction

Pallet Rack Example

What is a Pallet Rack System?

Pallet rack, or pallet racking, is a material handling storage system designed to store materials to better utilize floor space in a warehouse or storage facility.  Although there are many varieties of pallet rack, and each is designed with specific functions and each type has definite advantages, all variations allow for the storage of palletized materials in horizontal rows with multiple levels.

All pallet rack systems are concerned with efficiency and safety. Knowing the safest and most efficient ways to store and move materials within your facility saves time and money, keeps your employees safe, and gives you and the best chance for success in a competitive marketplace.

Elements & Components of Pallet Rack Systems

Before you can determine the best system for your needs, it’s important to understand all the elements and components of a pallet rack system. Pallet rack systems are more than just frames and beams; there are a number of elements that can affect a racks system’s capabilities.

In this upcoming blog series, we’re going to explore all the parts and pieces of a basic pallet rack system, beginning literally, with the ground.

Sitework & Flooring

Sitework includes many things, but this article will focus on “soil bearing capacity.” It’s very important that the capacity of the soil and the flooring are able to support your pallet rack load requirements.

Steel Capacity

Different manufacturers choose different types of steel for the their pallet rack components. Learn about tensile strength, yield and grade to reduce the chances of pallet rack failures.

Base Plate

The base plate is a crucial component that anchors the pallet rack, disperses the weight of the rack column, and stabilizes the rack to prevent it from tipping. We’ll address base plate design and how different designs can affect rack capacity, configuration options, and maintenance.

Frames & Load Beams

The most visible part of the rack, the upright frame, is composed of columns and bracing. The horizontal load beams are attached to the frames and have calculated capacities. Learn about several of the many different options available in frame and beam design and why and when to consider each.

Accessories

There are a variety of accessories that can impact the capacity and stability of a pallet rack system. We’ll explore the different pallet rack accessories and how they can enhance and affect a rack system’s capabilities.
